BEAUFORT, S.C. — Coastal flooding, large waves and dangerous rip currents are expected along Beaufort, S.C., and coastal Jasper County shores Tuesday, according to National Weather Service warnings highlighted by coastal forecasts.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Oct. 6. Up to half a foot of saltwater inundation above ground level is expected along shorelines and tidal waterways, and some roads could be affected. High tide at Fort Pulaski is expected around 5:31 p.m., with flooding possible several hours before and after.

A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, with breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet in the surf zone. A high rip current risk continues until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Officials warn that rip currents can pull even strong swimmers into deeper water.

Forecasters also flagged wind gusts of 35 to 40 mph on Beaufort County islands and beaches Tuesday, with weaker but still risky gusts inland and on elevated bridges. Minor tree damage and damage to poorly built structures are possible before winds ease Wednesday morning.

Beach erosion is possible, especially around high tide. Swimmers and surfers are urged to stay out of the water while the advisories are active.
