BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. — Prosecutors in Beaufort County have dropped attempted murder charges against Zayvion Moon, who was accused in a 2021 shooting at a graduation party at the Grays Hill Community Center.

Moon was facing charges of two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Court records show prosecutors filed on September 23 to end the case.

The 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, which prosecutes cases in Allendale, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties, said an important witness and one of the victims were uncooperative and did not want to testify. Without that testimony, prosecutors said, the charges could not have been proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

The shooting happened late on June 16, 2021, when Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of shots fired at a graduation party at the community center on Bruce K. Smalls Drive. Two people were hurt: one adult male and one juvenile female.

The girl sustained minor wounds, while the man had serious wounds and was transferred to the Medical University of South Carolina. Deputies recovered several cartridge casings inside the building.

Moon, a 17-year-old from Burton at the time, turned himself in to Sheriff’s Office investigators in Beaufort on June 22, 2021, after a magistrate signed warrants for his arrest.
