BEAUFORT, S.C. — Beaufort County elections director Jean Felix on Tuesday rejected a social media rumor that poll staff will scribble on ballots and knock those sheets out of the count.

Felix, who directs Beaufort County’s voter registration board, said the circulating claim is false. Managers at the polls are not supposed to write on a voters ballot, she said.

An unintended smudge also would not void the vote, she added. Machines would still read the card, and the choices marked by the voter would be counted under the usual county procedures.

Felix pointed people with questions about South Carolina voting rules to scVOTES.gov or their local elections office instead of social feeds.

The statement comes as Beaufort County voters move through the rest of the 2026 election season, when ballot-handling tips often spread quickly online.
