BEAUFORT, S.C. — Drivers in downtown Beaufort cannot get through the corner of Bay and Charles streets this week while crews rebuild its crosswalks, and the city expects the work to wrap up by Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 21, if the weather holds.

The intersection shut late Sunday evening, Oct. 18. City officials had first planned to start Monday morning but moved the date up because rain was possible early in the week. Workers are putting the brick-edged concrete crosswalks back to how they looked before construction began, and the fresh concrete has to cure before cars return.

With the corner closed, no traffic on Bay can pass through Charles. Eastbound drivers are sent up New Castle Street, along Craven Street and back down Scott Street, or they can stay on Craven until Carteret Street. Westbound drivers go up West Street, east on Craven and down New Castle.

The crosswalk job is one of the last pieces of the Charles/Craven Street Drainage Project, which the city owns. The South Carolina Office of Resilience acts as the city’s representative on the job, hiring and paying the contractors. All of the underground pipe work was done at the start of October, and rain could still push the reopening back.
