BEAUFORT, S.C. — Beaufort County Council reversed course Monday night and agreed without dissent to make public the findings of its outside inquiry into county administration, setting a deadline of noon Tuesday.

Members spent part of the evening behind closed doors before voting. The special called session opened at 5 p.m. and wrapped up shortly past 8. Councilman Logan Cunningham made the motion, which also waives attorney-client privilege on the document, and Vice Chair Anna Maria Tabernik seconded it.

On Oct. 12, Cunningham and Council member David Bartholomew sought to release the 15-page report right away, and the motion lost by a single vote. Council Chair Alice Howard was among those who said Administrator Michael Moore, who had the findings since Oct. 6, should first get a chance to respond.

The inquiry dates to June, when council retained the Quick Group, an investigative firm based in Charleston, for a review of offices the administrator oversees. By Aug. 3, legal counsel tied to the work had already cost the county nearly $25,000.

Council took no other action on the report Monday, and Cunningham said further steps remain possible.
