BEAUFORT, S.C. — A state coastal regulator will take public comment next week on a large community dock and boat ramp planned for a new upscale neighborhood on Upper Cane Island, a small island on the Beaufort River close to downtown Beaufort.

Kane Island Development Company is preparing a 230-acre former daffodil farm on the island for houses. Its application calls for a covered pierhead, a floating dock with a fish cleaning station, and a concrete boat ramp measuring 17 by 128 feet with riprap for erosion control. An earlier courtesy dock beside the ramp has been dropped from the plan.

Neighbors on Cat Island and Distant Island say the dock would intrude on Distant Creek and bring light, noise and harm to wildlife. They asked for the hearing. The developer says the dock meets state rules and that more than 80 acres will stay open space.

The Bureau of Coastal Management hearing is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Beaufort City Hall on Boundary Street. Online comments are open until Nov. 11, and the bureau will weigh the project under the Coastal Tidelands and Wetlands Act before deciding.
