BEAUFORT, S.C. — Beaufort County will elect a new sheriff on Tuesday, Nov. 3, as Republican Doug Seifert and Democrat Alphonso Small Jr. meet at the top of a long local ballot that also covers county money, schools and city leadership.

Inside the city, Grady Woods, Josh Scallate, Jared Madison and Thad E. Lane are the four names in a nonpartisan contest for two at-large Beaufort City Council seats.

Countywide, eight County Council seats are up, though three of them have just one active candidate. Seven school board contests are on the ballot as nonpartisan races. David Cadd and Carletha Frazier are running for auditor, Scott Songer and Maria Walls want the treasurer job, and Heather Galvin has no opponent for probate judge.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., and voters still in line at closing time can cast a ballot. Precinct and sample ballot details are listed by address on the state election site.

State rules call for one current photo ID at the polls, such as a South Carolina driver license, a DMV ID card, a federal military ID or a passport. A voter who does not have one can still vote a provisional ballot, which counts if the ID is shown to the county elections office before certification, usually on the Thursday or Friday after Election Day. Voters who are registered can also get a free photo ID at the county office by giving a birth date and the last four digits of a Social Security number.
