PORT ROYAL, S.C. — Drivers in Port Royal will need a detour starting Sunday, when the town shuts part of Paris Avenue to cars for four days of milling and fresh asphalt.

The closed stretch runs from near the Parker’s station at Ribaut Road to just beyond Coast Roast Coffee. Town officials said work is set for Sunday, Nov. 8, through Wednesday, Nov. 11, if the weather holds, and the dates could shift.

The paving is one of the last pieces of the Paris Avenue Streetscape Project, a $16 million rebuild that is the largest capital project the town has taken on. The avenue was first built wide for trucks serving the old port. The new design narrows it, makes it friendlier to people on foot, adds stormwater pipes under the road and improves access to the Cypress Wetlands.

Shops and restaurants along the closed section stay open and can be reached on foot, with parking on the open part of the avenue. Detour signs will guide traffic, and officials asked drivers to leave extra time.
