She was preceded in death by her husband, Hendrix TenEyck, with whom she shared 53 years, as well as her daughter Milissa Marian, who tragically passed away shortly after birth in 1978, and her brother, John Downer Pennock, who lost his life in World War II.
Early Life and Education
TenEyck was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, where she attended Chatham Hall School in Virginia and later graduated from Vassar College in New York. Her family played a significant role in the Beaufort community after acquiring land on Battery Creek in 1936, now known as Cottage Farm. During World War II, she lived in Beaufort while her father was stationed in Orlando, Florida, and was honored as Miss Beaufort while attending high school.
Professional Achievements and Community Contributions
In her professional life, TenEyck served as the Personnel Manager at the family-owned business, Hall & McChesney, for 26 years. After relocating to Beaufort in 1979, she actively contributed to the community by working with various local businesses, including Battery Creek Catering and developing Jericho Woods on Battery Creek Road. Her contributions also included a role in building the Gadsby Tavern, known today as Q on Bay.
Mary’s dedication to community service was evident through her involvement with numerous charitable organizations. She served on the boards of the Child and Family Service, the Junior League of Syracuse, American Red Cross, and others. Her volunteer efforts included working with The Family Caregiver for Hospice in Central New York, as well as being a member of several clubs and ministries.

Mary is survived by her four children: Laura Nichols in Warrenton, Virginia; John in Taylor, Texas; Peter in Beaufort, South Carolina; and Hendrix, Jr. in Peconic, New York. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Known for her nurturing nature, Mary would end every meal blessing with the heartfelt phrase, “Bless all those who sit within our circle out of sight.”
