News Summary

The Beaufort Port Royal Fire Department has achieved an ISO Class 1 rating, placing them among the top fire departments in the nation. This recognition will help residents and businesses enjoy lowered insurance premiums. However, the department faces challenges, including recent vandalism at their headquarters and a residential fire incident. Despite these challenges, community safety remains a priority as the department continues its outreach and fire safety education efforts.

Beaufort, SC – The Beaufort Port Royal Fire Department has proudly announced their achievement of an ISO Class 1 rating, a distinction that highlights the department’s exceptional fire protection services. This prestigious recognition places the department among the elite in the nation, as only approximately 500 fire departments across the United States have been awarded this highest possible rating from the Insurance Services Organization (ISO).

The ISO Class 1 rating is significant not only for the fire department’s reputation but also for local residents and business owners. This rating will lead to lower insurance premiums for property owners in Beaufort and Port Royal. With the department joining a select group of only 17 fire departments in South Carolina that hold an ISO Class 1 designation, community members can have increased confidence in their fire protection services.

Despite this major milestone, the week began on a challenging note for the Beaufort Port Royal Fire Department. On Thursday morning, the organization’s headquarters, located at 135 Ribaut Road, was vandalized at approximately 7:20 a.m. The Beaufort Police are currently investigating the incident, reporting that a known suspect intentionally damaged city property before fleeing the scene. Warrants will be pursued for the individual involved in the vandalism.

In another incident on Saturday, December 28, the fire department responded to a residential structure fire in Port Royal. The fire, believed to have been caused by a space heater, broke out at a one-story home on Ritter Circle just after 12:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames pouring from the residence. The sole occupant of the home suffered burn injuries and was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina Burn Center for treatment.

In response to this tragic incident, Deputy Fire Chief Ross Vezin has stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with the space heater being the suspected source of ignition. Vezin emphasized the importance of safety precautions, advising the public to maintain a distance of at least three feet from any heat source to help prevent such fires in the future.

This week’s events reflect both the strengths and challenges faced by the Beaufort Port Royal Fire Department. The achievement of the ISO Class 1 rating demonstrates the department’s commitment to delivering high-quality fire protection services, while the incidents of vandalism and fire underline the need for continued vigilance and safety practices within the community.

The Beaufort Port Royal Fire Department serves a vital role in the safety and protection of local residents and businesses, and this recent rating validates their hard work and dedication. As they continue to respond to emergencies and maintain safety, community members can expect enhanced fire protection services and potential savings on their insurance due to this esteemed recognition.

As the department moves forward, they will continue to focus on fire safety education and community outreach initiatives aimed at further reducing fire incidents and enhancing overall safety in Beaufort and Port Royal.
