Beaufort, SC — A second arrest has been made in connection with the May shooting at the Garden Oaks Apartments that resulted in two individuals being injured. Cleve Rudolph White, a 20-year-old, was taken into custody on June 16, 2024, and faces multiple charges including possession of a machine gun, possession of a weapon by a person prohibited, attempting to sell a machine gun, and possession with intent to distribute.

The first suspect, 35-year-old Gasnel O’Bryan Miller, was arrested earlier on June 3. Miller is charged with discharging a firearm into a vehicle and discharging a firearm within city limits. Both arrests follow an investigation into the shooting incident that took place on May 28 at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Upon police arrival at the Garden Oaks Apartments, officers discovered a victim suffering from a gunshot wound, who was treated on the scene and subsequently taken to an area hospital for further care. A second victim fled in a vehicle but was later found and provided assistance from police until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived. Investigators believe both individuals were involved in an exchange of gunfire.

Authorities are confident that there are no additional suspects involved in the shooting. This incident at Garden Oaks Apartments marks at least the third violent crime reported at the facility since it started renting in late 2024. Previous violent incidents include a fatal stabbing in December 2024 and a homicide in February 2025.

In response to the rise in violence at the Garden Oaks Apartments, the Beaufort Police Department has established a substation at the complex and increased police patrols in the area. Mayor Phil Cromer has indicated that city officials have been proactive in urging a stronger police presence following the string of violent incidents, particularly after the shooting.

The Beaufort Police Department has requested that anyone with information regarding the shooting contact Investigator Martin or share tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Law enforcement aims to gather further details that could assist in the investigation and help curb future violence.

In efforts to improve safety in high-crime areas, Police Chief Stephenie Price has initiated the “Safe Living Beaufort” program. This initiative, designed to bolster police presence and reduce crime rates in troubled neighborhoods, has already shown positive results at other apartment complexes in Beaufort prior to its extension to Garden Oaks Apartments.

As of now, White remains in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center, and the investigation is ongoing. The local authorities continue to encourage community involvement to enhance safety and address crime in the area.
