Community Mourns the Loss of Barbara G. Brooks and George Harland Zittrauer
The communities of Savannah and Guyton are grieving the recent deaths of two beloved members, Barbara G. Brooks, 88, and George Harland Zittrauer, 81. Barbara passed away on May 30, 2025, at her home after a prolonged battle with health issues, while George died on June 4, 2025, at Memorial Health Medical Center.
Barbara G. Brooks
Barbara G. Brooks was born on March 29, 1937, in Savannah, Georgia. As the eldest daughter of the late Marjorie Reed, she graduated from Savannah High School in 1954. Continuing her education, Barbara attended the Graduate School International Accountants Society and completed numerous courses through the Department of the Navy and Beaufort Technical College.
From 1965 to 1975, Barbara worked as the Comptroller and Director of the Leopold Adler Corporation. She later joined The Marine Corps Recruit Depot Club System in 1975, where she dedicated her career until retiring in the early 1990s as the Director. She was an active member of her community and was regularly seen at Littlejohn’s on Jones Street with her dog, Bandit.
Barbara was a talented designer renowned for her exquisite home and garden aesthetics. Passionate about animals, she contributed to numerous animal rescue organizations throughout her life. Her family held a special place in her heart, and she cherished time spent with her daughters, sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 41 years, Thomas L. Brooks; daughters Carol Lancaster and Lisa Lee Moore; son Dr. Thomas L. Brooks; sister Diann Brooks; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, sister Evyonne Sweeney, brother James D. Reed, and stepson John R. Brooks.
A Celebration of Life service for Barbara will be organized at a later date by Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors-Islands Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice Savannah, Inc., or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
George Harland Zittrauer
George Harland Zittrauer was born on May 12, 1944, in Hinesville, Georgia. He lived most of his life in the coastal empire, graduating from Savannah High School in 1964. Following high school, George served in the United States Air Force, where he was primarily stationed in Spain. His service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.
After his military service, George worked for Great Dane Trailers as a welder for 29 years. He was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly as an avid deer hunter and houndsman. A devoted member of Bethesda Church for over 30 years, he also cherished the time he spent with his five grandchildren, earning the affectionate nickname “Papa.”
George is survived by his wife, Marilyn Joyce Burke Zittrauer; sons Russell Eric and David Harland Zittrauer; sister Rose Marette Irby; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Elmyra Close and Sarah Howard, and brothers Burtram and Bartow Zittrauer.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects to George on June 8, 2025, at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Garden City Chapel. A graveside service will follow on June 9, 2025, at Bethesda Church Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Matt Waldren.
Both Barbara G. Brooks and George Harland Zittrauer will be remembered fondly by their families and communities for their contributions and love for those around them.
