Knoxville, Tennessee – Earl Herbert Schlabach, a cherished radio host and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully in his home on May 19, 2025, at the age of 94. Schlabach was a notable figure in both the media and his local community, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service.
Born on March 11, 1931, in Elkton, Michigan, to parents Erwin and Leetta Blanch Bedford Schlabach, Earl graduated from Elkton High School and later attended Fort Wayne Bible College in Indiana. It was at this institution that he found his passion for broadcasting, becoming the voice of the college radio station.
In 1951, Earl married his high school sweetheart, Nelda Alberta Wolfe. Together, they raised two children, Dennis and Debi, while Earl built a successful career as a radio host for over 15 years. In addition to his broadcasting endeavors, he worked for 25 years in human resources at Ford Motor Company, illustrating a diverse professional background that encompassed both creative and corporate spheres.
After retiring from Ford, Earl and Nelda relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee, where they became active members of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church (CSPC). Earl participated in numerous church activities, including the CSPC Choir, prison ministry, as well as radio and television initiatives. He was well known for his friendly demeanor, humor, and affection for sharing dad-jokes, providing warmth and joy to those around him.
In March 2006, Earl faced the heartbreak of losing his wife, Nelda, after 55 years of marriage. However, he found love again and remarried Jean Barton in February 2007, following a ceremony at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. The couple split their residences between Knoxville and Beaufort, South Carolina, where they were members of Sea Island Presbyterian Church. Earl cherished his time participating in Men’s Bible study and dining at local favorite restaurants with Jean.
Throughout his life, Earl remained committed to maintaining close relationships with family and friends. He regularly communicated with loved ones through thoughtful emails titled “A Thought for Today,” “Did You Know …?”, and “Grin …,” reflecting his desire to connect and share inspiration. Earl was deeply loved by his family, which includes his wife Jean Schlabach, his son Dennis (and daughter-in-law Bethany), daughter Debi Robinson, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Clarke Schlabach (Diana) and sister Anne Sandison.
His passing is felt profoundly by many, as he was also preceded in death by his parents, first wife Nelda, brother-in-law Darrell Sandison, and son-in-law Steve Robinson. Earl’s friendly spirit and love for others will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by those whose lives he touched.
A funeral service is scheduled for June 7, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Clay Harrington officiating. In honor of Earl’s life and charitable spirit, memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to the Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church Mission Fund or Sea Island Presbyterian Church.
