News Summary

Hilton Head Island is seeing heightened law enforcement presence as vehicle burglaries surge in the area. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating multiple incidents, urging residents to secure their vehicles. Recent thefts have resulted in significant losses, prompting concern amongst locals, while a suspect in one incident was apprehended. Law enforcement is encouraging community vigilance and has provided contact information for reporting suspicious activities.

Hilton Head Island is set to experience an increased law enforcement presence as investigations continue into a surge of vehicle burglaries. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has reported multiple incidents over the past few weeks, resulting in significant losses and raising concerns among residents.

On Saturday morning, deputies responded to reports of a man breaking into vehicles in the area. The incidents were concentrated in locations including Victoria Square, Matthews Drive, Shrimp Lane, Marshland Road, and Gardner Drive. When law enforcement arrived, the suspect fled the scene but was quickly apprehended following a search of the vicinity. Details regarding the suspect’s identity and the specific charges against him have not yet been released, as investigations remain ongoing. For the time being, officials state that there is no active threat to the community.

In light of the alarming uptick in vehicle burglaries, the Sheriff’s Office will maintain a visible presence in these areas. Residents are urged to report any suspicious behavior to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office’s non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777 or by dialing 911 for emergencies.

Significantly, Hilton Head experienced over $7,000 in thefts during the first half of November alone. Most of the reported thefts involved unlocked vehicles, highlighting a trend where opportunistic thieves are able to access valuable items with relative ease. While break-ins tend to peak during the summer, the Sheriff’s Office notes that these incidents are occurring throughout the year.

Of the nine reported thefts during this recent wave, many occurred mid-island or in northern Hilton Head. In some occurrences, multiple vehicles were targeted at the same locations within a short timeframe. Items stolen included valuable possessions such as moped and motorcycle trailers, golf clubs, and purses. Notably, stolen credit cards were used shortly after some thefts to purchase items like Visa gift cards, a common tactic employed by thieves to avoid detection.

On specific dates, the following thefts were reported:

  • November 2: A moped worth $1,000 stolen during a test ride.
  • November 4: Golf clubs valued at $500 taken from a vehicle.
  • November 5: A motorcycle trailer worth $2,000 reported stolen.
  • November 7: Personal items, including a $70 purse, taken from a car.
  • November 11: A unlocked truck reported stolen items totaling $500, including a purse, wallet, and cash.
  • November 12: A purse and wallet taken from a parked vehicle, leading to the use of stolen cards to make purchases worth $1,000.
  • November 14: A car had its driver-side window smashed, but no items were stolen.

The thefts are seen as crimes of opportunity, where thieves check for unlocked vehicles primarily in residential neighborhoods and tourist-heavy areas. Consequently, law enforcement encourages residents to keep their vehicles locked and discourage leaving valuables, firearms, or medications unattended.

To further protect their property, residents might consider installing home surveillance systems focusing on parked vehicles. This step can enhance security and deter potential thefts.

In a separate event at the Tanger Outlets, thieves managed to break in by cutting holes to steal approximately 1,600 pairs of sunglasses valued at around $1 million. This incident also resulted in property damage and the theft of a surveillance system. Local management is currently collaborating with law enforcement to investigate the outlet theft.

As concerns over vehicle burglaries and other thefts grow, community vigilance and proactive measures can help safeguard residents’ belongings and enhance public safety on Hilton Head Island.
