News Summary

A woman was rescued from her SUV following a two-vehicle collision on Joe Frazier Road during heavy rainfall. Emergency responders worked quickly to free her from the wreckage, and she was transported to a medical facility for serious injuries. The incident caused significant traffic delays while highlighting concerns about driver safety amid adverse weather conditions, with numerous vehicle collisions reported this year in the area.

Burton – A driver was rescued from a two-vehicle collision on Joe Frazier Road on Monday morning, May 12, during heavy rainfall that caused significant traffic delays. The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Joe Frazier Road and Burton Wells Road.

The collision involved a pickup truck and an SUV, resulting in the female driver of the SUV being trapped inside her vehicle. Emergency responders, including the Burton Fire District, Beaufort County EMS, the Sheriff’s Office, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, were dispatched to the scene to manage the incident.

Firefighters from the Burton Fire District worked to free the trapped driver while Beaufort County EMS paramedics stabilized her condition. She was later transported to a medical facility for treatment of potentially serious injuries sustained in the crash.

As a result of the rescue efforts, traffic on Joe Frazier Road was delayed for approximately 45 minutes. The heavy rainfall on that day contributed to the challenging conditions, increasing the risk for accidents. The rainfall not only affected this collision but also led to broader traffic issues in the region.

As of May 12, the Burton Fire District has responded to over 75 vehicle collisions this year, with 57% of these incidents resulting in injuries. This reflects a growing concern for driver safety in the area, particularly during adverse weather conditions. So far this year, there have been five rescues of trapped occupants in vehicle collisions.

In addition to the collision on Joe Frazier Road, other weather-related traffic delays were reported. Drivers were advised to exercise caution on Castle Rock Road near S.C. 170. Furthermore, the on-ramp to U.S. 278 Eastbound from S.C. 170 had collected a significant amount of water, posing additional hazards for motorists.

In light of the heavy rains and potential flooding, the South Carolina Emergency Preparedness Division has issued safety tips. They recommend that drivers avoid traveling whenever possible, as road conditions can change rapidly during storms. It is important to note that even six inches of standing water can damage vehicles, and motorists should never attempt to drive through floodwaters. These precautions are crucial in ensuring the safety of all drivers on the road.
