News Summary

The City of Beaufort has closed a section of the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park due to serious safety issues after a structural assessment confirmed significant deterioration of the platform’s pilings. This temporary closure impacts the waterfront area, adjacent day dock, and playground. Despite concerns, the upcoming Beaufort Water Festival will proceed as scheduled. City officials are implementing safety measures and exploring funding options for necessary repairs while forming a Waterfront Advisory Committee to guide future maintenance efforts.

Beaufort, South Carolina – The City of Beaufort has announced the closure of a 40-foot-wide section of Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park due to serious safety concerns. The decision, prompted by an assessment revealing significant deterioration and overstressed pilings in the park’s platform system, will initially affect the waterfront segment as well as the adjacent day dock and playground.

Engineers from McSweeney Engineers and JMT conducted a thorough structural assessment of the park, identifying critical issues that necessitated immediate action. City Manager Scott Marshall has indicated that public safety is the foremost priority behind this decision. The city is taking the precautionary measures seriously, with barriers and clear signage being installed to prevent unauthorized access to the closed areas. City officials plan to enforce strict penalties for any trespassing in the off-limits sections.

This closure comes just ahead of the long-awaited Beaufort Water Festival, starting on July 11. However, city officials have assured that all scheduled festival events will proceed as planned. Organizers have been in communication with city representatives to ensure safety measures are in place during the festival, despite the partial closure of the park.

The structural concerns primarily affect the waterside portion of the park, which has served as a vital community recreational space since it opened in 1979. The platform, which is 46 years old, rests on approximately 570 pilings, some of which have shown signs of severe deterioration in past inspections. Previous assessments indicated that several pilings require immediate repair or replacement, particularly given their crucial role in the stability of the structure.

Following the latest assessment, city staff are committed to consulting engineers to determine if portions of the park, such as the day dock and playground, can be safely reopened in the near future. Nonetheless, any necessary repairs or extensive replacement of the platform structure could take years to finalize.

Moreover, the city has previously restricted visits by large cruise ships to the park as a precautionary measure in light of these ongoing structural issues. In response to the current situation, city officials are actively exploring various funding options to address the extensive repairs that the park will require to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the community moving forward.

To facilitate future decision-making regarding the park’s sustainability, City Council has formed a Waterfront Advisory Committee. This committee will play a critical role in guiding recommendations for the maintenance and revitalization of the park, ensuring that it continues to function as a key recreational asset for years to come.

The decision to close a portion of the waterfront park reflects a proactive approach by the city to maintain public safety while also addressing the long-term viability of one of Beaufort’s most cherished spaces. The community remains hopeful that the timely evaluations and repairs will lead to a restored and secure venue for public enjoyment.
