Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

In tragic events within a day of each other, two men from Georgia drowned at South Carolina beaches, prompting local authorities to issue warnings about water safety as the busy Independence Day weekend approaches.

A 65-year-old man drowned on Tuesday, July 1, at Hunting Island State Park. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call just before 5:30 p.m. regarding a man floating in the water. A bystander who was fishing along the shoreline noticed the victim and bravely swam out to bring him to safety. Upon reaching the shore, the bystander performed CPR, but despite the efforts of those present and the first responders who arrived shortly after, the man could not be revived. The identity of the 65-year-old man has not been released by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Just a day earlier, on June 30, authorities responded to a drowning incident at Coligny Beach involving a 69-year-old man named William King, also from Georgia. Deputies received reports of a medical emergency just before 6:30 p.m. on that day. Similar to the incident at Hunting Island, a bystander helped bring King to shore. Once on land, a lifeguard initiated lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, William King was pronounced dead at approximately 7:07 p.m.

Both incidents highlight the potential dangers faced by beachgoers, especially as thousands flock to the shoreline for holiday weekends. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is urging all beach visitors to prioritize their safety and remain vigilant. With the Independence Day weekend approaching, it is crucial for individuals and families to be aware of their surroundings and the conditions of the water.

Water Safety Recommendations

Local officials encourage beachgoers to stay informed about current ocean conditions. Beach visitors are advised to regularly check updates provided by the National Weather Service and local beach services. These updates include vital information on water currents, surf conditions, and weather alerts.

In addition, beach flags and signs are essential tools for ensuring safety. Beach flags indicate the current conditions; a yellow flag signifies moderate surf, a red flag indicates high hazard conditions, and a purple flag warns of dangerous marine life. Following these visual indicators can play a significant role in maintaining safety while visiting the beach.

Community Response

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has expressed deep condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. Such incidents serve as a painful reminder of the risks associated with water activities and the importance of proper safety precautions.

As many families prepare to celebrate the Independence Day weekend, authorities advise caution and encourage everyone to prioritize their safety at the beach. By staying informed and adhering to safety guidelines, visitors can enjoy their time by the water while minimizing risks associated with unforeseen circumstances.
