JoAnne met her future husband, Rockne Flowers, during a blind date while studying at the University of Wisconsin. The couple married on January 3, 1953, shortly after JoAnne graduated. She taught science at Edgewood High School in Madison for two years before dedicating herself to being a full-time mother.

Renowned for her love of cooking, JoAnne became a cherished host at family gatherings and dinner parties.
