Herbert Washington, 75, joined the U.S. Army after graduating from Robert Smalls High School in 1969. His service included Basic and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Jackson, followed by deployment to Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. Washington also served in the Army Reserve, utilizing the GI Bill to pursue higher education and working for 21 years as a civil servant at the Parris Island Public Works Department before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 2010.

Nathaniel Robinson, 59, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Beaufort in 1984.
