Spotlight on Local Giving — Honoring Lenore Gleason
Supporting Brighter Futures for Beaufort’s Children at The Sandbox
A Lifelong Passion for Children and Community
For Lenore Gleason, supporting young children has never been a casual interest — it has been the heart of her life’s work. With a deep background in education, Lenore began her career teaching high school before earning her master’s degree in Child Development and Family Relations. She later spent ten years in early childhood classrooms, where she found joy in nurturing curiosity, imagination, and hands-on learning.
A Connection Rooted in Family and Community
Long before joining The Sandbox Board, Lenore was already closely connected to the museum through her grandchildren. Visiting The Sandbox became a treasured family tradition, and her experiences with the exhibits and programs reinforced her belief in the museum’s mission of meaningful play and childhood development.
When asked to join the Board, Lenore saw it as a natural extension of her lifelong dedication to children. Her involvement has helped strengthen The Sandbox’s impact across Beaufort and the surrounding Lowcountry.
A Family Legacy of Local Giving
The Gleason family has been a longstanding supporter of The Sandbox through their time, expertise, and generosity. During the museum’s building campaign, their daughter’s shop — The Chocolate Canopy — donated the beloved castle exhibit that continues to spark joy for families who walk through the doors.
Beyond special projects, Lenore and her husband Marty have contributed to initiatives that elevate the museum’s educational missions and allow more children to learn through play.
Inspired by a Tradition of Giving

Lenore often reflects on a lesson her mother taught her: even small gifts, when given by many, create extraordinary change. That message remains at the core of Lenore’s philanthropy — and aligns beautifully with The Sandbox’s mission.
“If everyone gave just a little, imagine the difference it would make,” Lenore says. Her words remind us that meaningful community impact doesn’t depend on large gestures — it comes from collective generosity.
An Invitation to Support Local Families
The Sandbox invites families, community members, and supporters across Beaufort to join Lenore in strengthening the future of playful learning. Every contribution — big or small — supports new exhibits, educational programming, and expanded access for local children and families.
Together, we can build brighter futures for Beaufort’s youngest learners.
