Beaufort, South Carolina, hosted a special event honoring three distinguished veterans: Hal Spicer, Nathaniel Robinson, and Kevin Egan. The American Legion Post 207 organized the ceremony to recognize their significant contributions to the military and the community.
Hal Spicer’s Military Journey
Hal Spicer, 73, began his military career when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970 in Jacksonville, Florida. After completing Boot Camp at Parris Island, he underwent Advanced Infantry Training at Camp Lejeune and trained as a Communications Wireman at Camp Pendleton. His first assignment took him to Okinawa, followed by a crucial posting at MCAS Beaufort where he provided communication support to the Marine Air Group. He participated in deployments across Puerto Rico, Camp Lejeune, and MCAS Yuma before being separated from the Marines in 1975 during the post-Vietnam drawdown.
Spicer moved to Beaufort in 1977, where he transitioned to the South Carolina Army National Guard as a Cavalry Scout. His dedication during this period earned him mobilizations for crises such as Hurricane Hugo and training for Desert Shield and later operations in Afghanistan. Spicer retired in 2000 as a Sergeant First Class and worked in county facilities maintenance from 1984 until 2013.
Nathaniel Robinson’s Service and Resilience
Nathaniel Robinson, 59, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1984 in Beaufort. After completing Boot Camp and Hospital Corpsman School at Great Lakes, Illinois, he was stationed at the Beaufort Naval Hospital. Robinson qualified for duty with the Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune and made deployments to Okinawa and Korea, concluding his Navy service in 1988 upon returning to Beaufort.
Post-military, Robinson found work in landscaping before transitioning to a career in law enforcement after graduating from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy in 2001. He served at various detention centers and even joined the Lady’s Island and St. Helena Fire Department. However, his life took a tragic turn when he suffered severe injuries, losing both legs and sustaining burns from a house fire. Despite these challenges, Robinson maintains a positive outlook, earning an Associate’s Degree with Honors as a paralegal from TCL in 2018.
Kevin Egan’s Accomplished Career
Kevin Egan, 74, began his academic journey at The Citadel, graduating in 1972 before enlisting in the United States Air Force in Charleston. Egan completed Basic Training at Lackland AFB in Texas, followed by Emergency Medical Service (EMS) training at Shepherd AFB. His initial assignment was at a naval hospital in Charleston, working in the intensive care unit. Egan also served with the Peace Corps in Paraguay after his active duty commitment.
During his service, Egan faced perilous situations, such as deploying to Jonestown, Guyana, to assist wounded Congressional aides and aiding in the extraction of Americans attacked by terrorists in Peru. He was also involved in operations in Grenada during political turmoil. Over a distinguished 30-year career, which included multiple deployments to Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield/Storm, Egan earned seven Commendation Medals and retired as a Major. He currently serves as the president of the Recreational Shrimpers of South Carolina.

The ceremony at Beaufort Post 207 was a heartfelt tribute to Hal Spicer, Nathaniel Robinson, and Kevin Egan, celebrating their bravery, resilience, and ongoing commitment to the community.
