Born on January 12, 1936, in Fayette County, Ohio, Loren was the second of four sons of Lloyd Henry and Nettie Florence (Coss) Cartwright. He attended Marion Township School and developed a lifelong bond with Mary Ellen Allison, whom he met when they were both just thirteen years old. After graduating from Washington High School in 1954, where he proudly served as Class President, Loren furthered his education at Wilmington College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Mathematics.

While in high school and college, he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. Upon completing his studies, he transitioned to active duty in June 1959, undergoing boot camp training at Parris Island. He continued his military education at Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia. Loren married Mary Ellen on December 27, 1959, at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington CH.

During his military service, Loren was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and Olathe, Kansas, eventually rising to the rank of Captain. He worked as an Air Traffic Controller supporting operations at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina. Loren was honorably discharged from active duty in June 1962 and returned to Fayette County, where he established the Cartwright Salvage Company. He continued to serve in the Marine Air Reserve Training Command until his honorable discharge from the Reserves in February 1971. Loren’s son, Clayton, will continue to operate the family business.

Loren was known for his devotion to family, hosting many holiday gatherings with relatives and close friends. His commitment to community service was evident through his 67 years of membership in the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio, where he achieved the 32nd Degree. He was also active with Shriners International, American Legion Post 25, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 129, National Wild Turkey Federation, the National Rifle Association, and proudly supported the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a Gold Circle Supporter. Loren and Mary received recognition as Friends of 4-H for their dedication to the 4-H committee.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and a son-in-law. Loren leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen Allison, their four children, and two grandsons, along with a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The funeral will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at The Gathering Place Church in Washington CH. Burial will follow at Highlawn Cemetery with full military honors from the Fayette County Honor Guard. A viewing will take place at The Gathering Place Church on Sunday, October 26, 2025, featuring an Elks service and a Masonic service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to designated organizations in Loren’s memory. The arrangements are entrusted to the Summers Funeral Home.
