Beaufort County FBI Raid Leads to Drug and Weapons Arrests

An FBI-led operation in Beaufort County, South Carolina, on June 5, 2025, resulted in the arrest of five individuals, with three facing federal charges concerning drug and weapons offenses. The raid targeted a residence located at Longwood Path and Eastern Road in Burton.

The arrested individuals include 44-year-old William Omar Heyward of Burton, 26-year-old Ishmael Allen Rivers of Yemassee, and 26-year-old Christopher Andrew Copeland of Beaufort. All three face serious federal charges, including possession and distribution of methamphetamines and illegal firearm possession.

The trio is indicted on 14 specific counts, which include:

  • Possession of 50 grams or more of methamphetamines.
  • Intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamines.
  • Possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person.
  • Carrying and using a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
  • Removing the serial number from a firearm.
  • Possession and transfer of a machine gun.

These alleged violations took place between November 2023 and May 2024. Heyward, in particular, has a history of convictions for drug and firearm-related offenses, having spent over 12 months in prison previously.

During the operation, two additional residents were detained: 37-year-old Katie Shannon Bradham and 34-year-old Lindel Hugh Bonney III, both from Beaufort. However, Bradham and Bonney were not connected to the FBI’s drug investigation and were arrested based on outstanding local warrants.

All five individuals were taken into custody without incident. The three men, Heyward, Rivers, and Copeland, have pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court and waived their detention hearings without prejudice.

Cooperative Law Enforcement Efforts

The investigation and subsequent raid involved a coordinated effort among various agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). The FBI emphasized that the nature of the operation was solely focused on drug-related offenses and firearms violations, clarifying that it was not related to immigration enforcement.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the raid. The successful collaboration between federal and local law enforcement signifies a dedicated approach to tackling drug trafficking and gun violence in the region.

Context of Drug and Firearm Crimes

Drug-related crimes, particularly those involving methamphetamines and firearms, have become increasingly prevalent across various communities in South Carolina and the broader United States. This trend has prompted law enforcement agencies to prioritize investigations into trafficking operations and illegal firearm possession. The allegations against Heyward, Rivers, and Copeland exemplify the ongoing struggle against drug-related crime, highlighting the severe consequences faced by individuals engaged in such activities.

The authorities’ proactive measures, as demonstrated by this recent raid, indicate a commitment to maintaining public safety and addressing the challenges posed by organized crime linked to drug trafficking and illegal weaponry. Law enforcement agencies continue to seek community involvement in reporting suspicious activities that may relate to drug distribution and firearm offenses.
