Hilton Head Island, S.C. — A driver died Sunday morning after a car left Marshland Road on Hilton Head Island and struck a utility pole and two trees, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened Sunday just after 10 a.m. near the intersection of Marshland Road and Leg O Mutton Road. Troopers said a 2018 Dodge Charger was headed south on Marshland Road when the driver lost control and the car ran off the road.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and the Dodge was the only vehicle involved, according to the Highway Patrol. The victim has not been publicly identified.
The death adds to a rising toll on area roads. Through Oct. 11, there have been 17 fatalities on Beaufort County roads compared to 15 during the same period last year, according to state Department of Public Safety records.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
