Ranked among the top private clubs in South Carolina, Secession is a walking-only, caddie-required club on Port Royal Sound. P.B. Dye's design emphasizes strategic angles over length, with marsh views on nearly every hole. The men's-golf-only culture and no-tee-time policy give it a distinctive character.
Walking-only. Caddies mandatory. Consistently ranked in Golf Digest America's 100 Greatest.

Original Fripp Island course, designed by George Cobb in 1964. Ocean Point runs along the Atlantic with marsh, dunes, and pine as recurring hazards. Six holes touch the ocean. Recent renovations updated the greens and drainage while preserving Cobb's classic routing.
Six holes with direct ocean views. Wildlife (deer, alligators) part of the experience.
Greens: Bermuda
Davis Love III's design threads through Fripp's maritime forest, tidal marsh, and lagoons. Considered the more strategic of the two Fripp courses, with narrower fairways and more forced carries than Ocean Point. Alligators are common; carry-yardages matter more than raw distance.
Davis Love III's design signature: elevated tees, framed doglegs, water on 14 holes.

Fazio's Cotton Dike opened Dataw Island's golf program in 1983 and remains the flagship. Set on former Sea Island cotton plantation land, the course uses tidal marsh, live oaks, and antebellum ruins as design features. Cotton Dike hosts most Dataw member tournaments.
Antebellum ruins along the fairways. Frequently ranked among the top private courses in the Lowcountry.
Greens: Bermuda
Arthur Hills routed Morgan River along the tidal river that gives it its name. More open than Cotton Dike, with longer forced carries and dramatic elevation changes near the closing holes. Members typically call it the tougher of Dataw's two courses.
Long carries off the tee. Wind exposure higher than Cotton Dike.

Callawassie is a 27-hole private community with three nine-hole layouts (Palmetto, Magnolia, Dogwood) that can be played in three combinations. Tom Fazio designed the original 18 with Jack Nicklaus consulting on greens. The Old Tabby Links designation refers to Callawassie's history as a Sea Island cotton and tabby-lime plantation.
27 holes routed in three loops. Community includes tabby ruins from the plantation era.

HEREBeaufort’s golf desk covers every course, every tournament, and every story relevant to golf in Beaufort County and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Beaufort is one of the most storied small golf towns in America — home to Palmetto Golf Club (founded 1892, the oldest course in South Carolina, redesigned by Alister MacKenzie in 1932, three years before he completed Augusta National) and Beaufort Golf Club (1912, one of the oldest public courses in the state). Coverage spans the private layouts (Palmetto), the semi-private clubs (Houndslake Country Club, Midland Valley Country Club, Cedar Creek Golf Club, The River Golf Club in nearby North Augusta), and the historic public access at Beaufort Golf Club.
Tournament coverage tracks the SC Golf Association events hosted at Houndslake, the Palmetto Golf Club Masters Week invitation events every April, SC Junior PGA events, Carolinas PGA pro-am stops, Carolinas Golf Association amateur championships at regional venues, and the SC High School League golf calendar for Beaufort County programs (South Beaufort, Beaufort, North Augusta, Midland Valley, Silver Bluff, Wagener-Salley, and Ridge Spring-Monetta). Just 17 miles down the road, Augusta National and the Masters Tournament drive massive April golf tourism to Beaufort — the town has been a winter colony for golfers, equestrians, and northerners since the late 1800s, and Masters Week remains the highest-demand hotel week of the year. Coverage also tracks course-condition reports after CSRA weather events from the National Weather Service Columbia office, club-pro hires, course renovations, and the small-business sponsorships flowing to junior-golf programs across Beaufort County.
