BEAUFORT, S.C. — Voters in Beaufort will pick two at-large members of City Council on Nov. 3, and all four people on the ballot say fixing Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and keeping growth from outrunning city infrastructure belong at the top of the list.
Josh Scallate, the lone incumbent in the field, won his seat in 2022 and works as a firefighter. Thad E. Lane, Jared Madison and Grady Woods are also running. The race is nonpartisan, and the two top vote-getters win four-year terms on the five-member council. Winners take office Dec. 8.
Repairs to the park promenade carry an estimated price of about $66 million. Scallate pointed to $925,000 in the fiscal 2027 budget for engineering work and argued city property owners should not shoulder the whole bill. Woods called the park the city priority above all others.
On growth, Madison backs standards that would test whether roads, utilities and public services can handle a project before approval, and he wants a permanent housing trust fund. Woods urged close review of zoning changes near existing neighborhoods, while Lane said established neighborhoods must be protected as the city grows.
