SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Victor Wembanyama walked into Frost Bank Center on Saturday looking ready to hunt monsters rather than play the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Spurs center came dressed as Geralt of Rivia, the sword-carrying hero of The Witcher fantasy series, in a long silver wig and black cloak with a blade slung over his back.
Spooky arrivals have become an annual habit for the 7-foot-4 Frenchman, a devoted fan of science fiction and fantasy. He showed up as Slenderman in 2023 and as No-Face from the animated film Spirited Away a year later.
Several teammates joined in. Rookie Taris Reed Jr. borrowed the three-hole-punch costume of Jim Halpert from The Office, and Carter Bryant came as Ace, a character from the 2002 crime film Paid in Full, with bandages on his head and neck. All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox went the family route, appearing as Buzz Lightyear with his household filling out the rest of the Toy Story cast.
Clubs around the league posted similar scenes through the weekend. Golden State’s Yaxel Lendeborg arrived for a Warriors game as horror villain Michael Myers, Kevin Love stayed fully in character as Cleveland from Family Guy, and Houston center Alperen Sengun channeled Neo from The Matrix.
Pregame tunnel walks have turned into a fashion stage for NBA players in recent seasons, and the Halloween weekend gave teams a ready-made batch of social media highlights between games.
