The University of South Carolina women’s soccer team secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Furman on Sunday evening, August 23, at Stone Stadium in Columbia. The Gamecocks, now with a 3-1-0 season record, saw four different players score goals, supported by three assists.
The Gamecocks established early control, maintaining possession and taking an initial shot in the fourth minute. Furman responded with two shots, both saved by fifth-year goalkeeper Christina Tsaousis.
Senior Sydney Middaugh opened the scoring for South Carolina in the tenth minute, netting her second goal of the season with an assist from senior Reagan Schubach. Senior Maryn Wolf then scored her first goal as a Gamecock, extending the lead to 2-0 following the team’s fourth corner kick of the half. Reese Slater and Taylor Bloom were credited with the assist.
The scoring continued in the 29th minute when senior Amanda Patrick drilled a shot into the net from inside the box, set up by a corner kick from Tutas, making it 3-0. Schubach added an unassisted goal in the 37th minute off a blocked corner, bringing the score to 4-0. This marked the 27th occasion in South Carolina’s history that the Gamecocks have scored four or more goals in a single half.
The second half featured a defensive battle, with neither team scoring. South Carolina recorded 11 shots in the second half. The Gamecocks significantly outshot the Paladins 23-2 overall, with an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. The match also drew a top-ten attendance record for Stone Stadium, with 5,509 fans present.
Looking ahead, South Carolina will travel to Laramie, Wyoming, to face the University of Wyoming on Thursday, August 26, at 6:00 p.m.
