Published September 21, 2026 at 9:38 pm | By Oswaldo Palma, Staff Reporter

The City of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs is scheduled to host two public visioning sessions this month to gather community input for a new public art initiative. These meetings represent a key step in shaping the future of public art across Charleston, including murals and other artistic installations.

The first session is set for Tuesday, September 24, at 6:00 PM. It will take place at the Carr-Richardson Park and Recreation Center, a vital community hub in the city. The second opportunity for public engagement will be on Thursday, September 26, also at 6:00 PM, at the Cannon Street Arts Center. Both locations are easily accessible for residents across various Charleston neighborhoods, ensuring broad participation in this important cultural discussion.

The initiative aims to develop a comprehensive framework for public art, considering its role in enhancing the city’s aesthetic, cultural identity, and community engagement. Charleston, known as The Holy City, has a rich history and a vibrant arts scene, making public art a significant component of its urban landscape and tourism appeal. The input gathered from these sessions will directly inform the drafting of the new public art policy, which will guide future projects and collaborations with local artists.

Residents are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives on how public art can best reflect Charleston’s unique character and contribute to its ongoing cultural development. The Office of Cultural Affairs emphasizes the importance of community involvement in creating a policy that truly serves the city’s diverse population and artistic aspirations.
