Update on MLILY Mattress Facility Fire in Winnsboro
Healthcare SC provided an update on Monday regarding a fire at the MLILY mattress production facility in Winnsboro. The fire initially occurred on August 16.
Fairfield County Administrator Vic Carpenter indicated that foam came into contact with a conveyor, which sparked the fire. Firefighters initially contained the blaze to a small area by approximately 6 p.m., but it reignited around 11:30 p.m. and spread throughout the facility. By 8 a.m. the following day, the fire was contained to the back right corner of the building.
Various agencies have provided oversight and collaboration throughout the process, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), Fairfield County, the Town of Winnsboro, firefighters, and first responders.
SCDES updates have indicated that monitoring data show no harmful impacts to air. Water samples collected by SCDES revealed no exceedances of drinking water quality standards and no impacts to drinking water provided to customers.
Healthcare SC is currently evaluating options for restoring operations and employment at the facility and is engaged in active discussions with Fairfield County and state officials regarding these efforts.
