BEAUFORT, S.C. — Beaufort National Cemetery is asking the public to stand in as family for an unclaimed Navy veteran who will be laid to rest there on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m.
The veteran, a Navy hospital corpsman third class, died last year at the age of 66, and his remains were unclaimed. He has no surviving family, so the cemetery put out a call for volunteers to attend the committal service. Anyone in the community may come, and the cemetery recommends arriving at least 15 minutes early.
Beaufort National Cemetery sits within the Beaufort city limits, about 42 miles north of the Savannah, Ga., airport. Its history runs deep: in May 1987, the remains of 19 Union soldiers found on Folly’s Island near Charleston were identified as members of the 55th Regiment and the 1st North Carolina Infantry.
