AIKEN, S.C. — A penalty kick with a little more than four minutes left earned the USC Beaufort women’s soccer team a 1-1 draw at USC Aiken on Saturday night.
The Sand Sharks fell behind just before halftime when Greta Ohlwein converted a penalty for the hosts at the 43:28 mark, her fourth goal of the year. Ohlwein nearly doubled the margin in the 59th minute, but her shot from about 10 yards clanged off the post.
Beaufort drew its own penalty after a foul in the box late in the second half. Yerger got a hand on the attempt, yet Erin Barrett’s kick still crossed the line at 85:55 for her fifth goal of the season, and neither side found a winner in regulation in what was USC Aiken’s final home match of the year.
USC Beaufort controlled most of the night. The visitors outshot USC Aiken 25-9, put 11 shots on target to five and earned eight corner kicks to one. Isabella Franco led the attack with seven shots, and Barrett added five. Aiken goalkeeper Savannah Yerger made 10 saves to keep the match level overall, while Graysen Asher stopped four for Beaufort.
The result leaves USC Beaufort at 6-6-2 overall and 2-4-2 in Peach Belt Conference matches. USC Aiken sits at 4-9-2 and 2-5-1 in league play.
