SEABROOK, S.C. — Jewell Marion Proctor, who is 77 and lives in Seabrook, is jailed on seven counts of attempted murder after the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says he opened fire inside a home and at the deputies who came to help early Sunday.
The call came in around 1 a.m. Oct. 18 about a person in an altered mental state at a house on H E Wilson Lane. On the way, deputies were told the person had a gun and had already fired it several times indoors.
Deputies got two people out of the house. Investigators say Proctor kept shooting inside and in the direction of officers until the sheriff’s special teams moved in and took him into custody. No one was reported hurt.
Proctor was taken to a hospital first. Deputies formally arrested him Monday afternoon, and he is now held at the county detention center in Beaufort.
The attempted murder counts are joined by four more charges: having a weapon while committing a violent crime, firing a gun into a home, aggravated breach of peace, and high and aggravated domestic violence. Beaufort and Bluffton police officers assisted at the scene.
Prosecution of Beaufort County felony cases falls to the solicitor’s office for the 14th Circuit, whose territory also takes in Allendale, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties.
The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information to call its nonemergency line at 843-524-2777.
