BEAUFORT, S.C. — A Beaufort native who led Marines in combat in Vietnam and later chaired Beaufort County Council will serve as grand marshal of this year’s Veterans Day Parade in Beaufort, county veterans officials announced.
Retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. William Rivers Von Harten, known locally as Skeet, spent two decades in the Marines and completed two Vietnam tours. He earned a Silver Star, a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars along the way, and in 2009 the state gave him its top civilian award, the Order of the Palmetto.
The parade steps off at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Groups line up on Adventure Street starting at 8 a.m., and the route begins outside Beaufort National Cemetery, follows Boundary Street, bends onto Bay Street and wraps up where Boundary meets Bladen Street.
Community groups, schools and civic clubs that want to march have until Saturday, Oct. 31 to send in an entry form to Beaufort County Veterans Affairs. Bad weather would cancel the event.
