BEAUFORT, S.C. — A girl, 11, who slipped away from Beaufort Middle School on Monday was found unharmed hours later, the Beaufort Police Department said.
The girl walked off the campus on Mossy Oaks Road, police said. The department put out a call for the public to help find her, and officers did not release her name. In that notice, police described her as wearing her hair in long braids, dressed in a red shirt with long sleeves and carrying a pink backpack, and asked anyone who spotted her to dial 911.
By early Monday afternoon the search was over. A police spokesperson said city officials had located the child, and an update posted at 1:13 p.m. said she was safe.
Police have not said how long she was gone or where she was found.
