Charleston County Public Library Opens Temporary Location
The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) is set to open a temporary location, Main at Morrison, on Oct. 5. This new facility, located at 1142 Morrison Drive, formerly the ILA Union hall, will serve the community while the main branch at 68 Calhoun Street undergoes renovations.
The Main Library closed on Aug. 1 to begin the final phase of a referendum-funded project. These renovations were approved by Charleston County voters in 2014, with the initial approval for the main library’s renovations occurring 12 years ago. The renovation work is anticipated to last approximately 18 months.
Main at Morrison will offer about 6,300 square feet of public space. It is designed to provide many core services that were available at the main library, including browsing collections for children, teens, and adults, holds pickup, interlibrary loan support, public computers, internet access, and print and copy services. An exterior materials return and staff assistance will also be available, along with limited space for select events and programs, and free parking.
According to CCPL Executive Director Angela Craig, Main at Morrison offers an opportunity to continue providing a welcoming and accessible library space for the downtown community during the renovation period. Additionally, the South Carolina Room at the Main Library, which closed earlier this year, has a temporary location at 1248 Camp Road, available by appointment only.
