ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. — Penn Center on St. Helena Island, S.C., will mark its 42nd Heritage Days Celebration from Nov. 12 to 14, filling its historic landmark campus with three days of programs built around Gullah Geechee culture and local youth.
Penn Center, founded in 1862, has played a central role in Black schooling, the civil rights movement and keeping Gullah Geechee traditions alive. Organizers are putting children and families at the center of this year’s lineup.
A free daylong symposium runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Frissell Community House and marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, with historians and educators exploring how Lowcountry communities shaped the Revolutionary era. Organizers ask guests to RSVP.
Students from the Beaufort County School District will perform at the opening ceremony. Across the three days, guests can browse local artists, writers and vendors, and kids can try crafts and bateau building in a hands-on village. A ticketed Lowcountry Supper costs $25 in the Emory S. Campbell Dining Hall. Brick Baptist Church hosts a praise house service, and the film Daughters of the Dust will be screened.
The closing day opens with the Heritage Days Parade. Lineup starts at 8 a.m. and the parade steps off at 9 a.m. Parking for every event costs $5.
