The United States Treasury Department announced on Monday, August 24, new threats of sanctions against countries that maintain economic ties with Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the move as a warning shot in what he has called an economic D-Day against Iran, though no major new penalties were immediately imposed.
Secretary Bessent stated that firms assisting Iran in money laundering activities face removal from the US dollar system. He also indicated that a significant sanctions announcement targeting an unspecified financial institution is expected by the end of this week. While specific timelines for countries to cut economic ties were not provided, Bessent noted that President Donald Trump has been engaging with world leaders on the matter.
Iran’s currency, the rial, has recently fallen to a record low against the US dollar, reaching over 2 million rials per dollar on the open market. President Trump has asserted that Iran’s economy is collapsing. However, Iranian Finance Minister Ali Madanizadeh stated that Tehran is fully prepared to counter any sanctions, and top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed the US threats as bluster, arguing that the US is not in a position to restrict Iran’s international economic relations.
Experts suggest that China, India, Turkey, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates could be most vulnerable to potential US actions. China is Iran’s largest trading partner, having imported $22.4 billion in Iranian exports and sending $15.6 billion in imports to Iran in 2022. The US already targets Iran’s oil sales, limiting exports to international buyers, including China. However, the US has not yet indicated a willingness to sanction Chinese banks, a move that could impact US-China relations.
The United Arab Emirates recently announced a suspension of all trade and financial transactions with Iran. Turkey and Iraq also maintain significant trade relationships with Iran, with Turkey importing 13% of its natural gas from Iran last year and Iraq relying on Iranian electricity and gas. India’s trade with Iran has decreased to approximately $1.6 billion in 2025-2026.
In related regional developments, Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met with Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday. Oman’s foreign minister is scheduled to visit Iran on Tuesday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway where tensions remain high. The US also officially lifted its state sponsor of terrorism designation on Syria.
