Three U.S. Marines stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort demonstrated exceptional courage and readiness on August 3, 2026, by rescuing a male driver from a burning vehicle on Parris Island Gateway in Beaufort. Their swift actions highlight the critical skills instilled through Marine Corps training and their commitment to public safety within the Beaufort community.
Corporal Nathan C. Armstrong, assigned to Combat Logistics Company 23, along with Corporal Isaac T. Ames and Corporal Caleb L. Crawford from Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, responded to the emergency near 67 Parris Island Gateway. The Marines encountered a rapidly escalating situation and worked collaboratively to extract the individual from the dangerous vehicle.
Corporal Armstrong, who had prior experience as a firefighter before joining the Marine Corps, utilized both his previous training and his Marine Corps instruction to assess the scene and determine the most effective way to assist. Upon arriving, the Marines approached a Beaufort County sheriff’s deputy and obtained a metal bar to attempt opening the vehicle’s door. When this initial effort proved unsuccessful, they quickly adapted their approach.
The Marines then broke the vehicle’s window, gaining access to the occupant and pulling him to safety. Corporal Armstrong stated that they instinctively stepped in to help, relying on their training. After removing the driver, their focus shifted to providing immediate care. Drawing on their Tactical Combat Casualty Care training, the Marines remained with the unconscious individual, ensuring his airway remained open and stabilizing his lower body to prevent further injury until emergency medical personnel arrived.
When paramedics reached the scene, Corporals Armstrong, Ames, and Crawford continued to assist first responders. They worked alongside Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies to help lift the individual onto a stretcher for transport to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Corporal Ames emphasized that the Marine Corps instills a constant state of mental readiness, enabling them to assess situations quickly and make decisive actions. Captain Andrew P. Faucett of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office’s Recruiting, Staffing & Training Division commended the Marines, noting their selfless actions and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way without hesitation.
The entire response, from assessing the burning vehicle and adapting to challenges to providing care until emergency services arrived, showcased the Marines’ teamwork, initiative, and composure under pressure.
