BEAUFORT, S.C. — Beaufort County voters who want to skip the Election Day lines are down to their last two chances, with early voting wrapping up at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
Turnout has been steady. Ballots from more than 34,000 county residents were already in, State Election Commission figures show, ahead of the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election.
Four centers are open Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Beaufort, voters go to the main elections office, 15 John Galt Road. Bluffton voters can use the library branch at 120 Palmetto Way. On Hilton Head, the site is Room 115 at the USCB campus, 1 Sand Shark Drive. Island residents farther north can cast a ballot at the St. Helena library branch, which sits at 6355 Jonathan Francis Senior Road, until the doors close Saturday evening.
No reason is needed to vote early, but every voter must bring an acceptable photo ID, such as a state DMV ID card or a voter registration card with a photo. Neighborhood precincts stay closed during early voting and open only on Election Day, so voters should head to one of the four centers rather than their usual polling place.
Absentee voting by mail still requires one of the reasons the state allows, such as military service or a job that keeps a voter away for the whole voting period. The top of the ticket this year is the race for governor, with Republican Alan Wilson facing Democrat Jermaine Johnson.
