BEAUFORT, S.C. — Beaufort County residents can now cast ballots at four early voting sites, and voters at the first busy locations reported waits of roughly half an hour as the statewide early voting window got underway Monday.
Voters can go to the libraries in Bluffton and on St. Helena, the University of South Carolina Beaufort campus on Hilton Head Island, or the main county election office. At the Bluffton branch, the line stretched around the building but moved steadily.
Sites take voters from 8:30 in the morning until 6 in the evening, six days a week, and Saturday, Oct. 31 is the last day to vote early before the Nov. 3 general election.
The county ballot carries the first open sheriff race in close to 30 years, because longtime Sheriff P.J. Tanner is not running again. The contest pits Doug Seifert, the Republican nominee, against Democrat Alphonso Small Jr.
Two ballot questions ask whether to add a penny sales tax for transportation, which could generate up to $780 million across nine years, after a different transportation tax failed in 2024. Eight County Council districts and seven school board seats are also up, and what appears on each ballot depends on the voter’s address.
