BEAUFORT, S.C. — A high morning tide could push saltwater onto some low-lying roads in Beaufort, S.C., and across Beaufort County on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The National Weather Service office in Charleston has a coastal flood advisory in effect from 7 a.m. until noon.
Forecasters expect as much as half a foot of water above ground along shorelines and tidal creeks. The tide is due to peak around 9:15 a.m., and flooding is possible for one to two hours on either side of it.
Drivers should give themselves extra time, steer clear of barricades and never drive into water when they cannot tell how deep it is. Owners of flood-prone property should take steps to protect it.
Beach visitors face a separate hazard. A high risk of rip currents stays in place through Tuesday evening, and forecasters urge swimmers to stay near a lifeguard and to float and swim parallel to the shore if a current grabs them.
Wednesday morning brings another tide high enough for minor flooding. Otherwise the weather stays pleasant: sunny Tuesday with a high near 75 and a low near 55 tonight, then a high near 77 Wednesday with northeast gusts as high as 23 mph.
