BEAUFORT, S.C. — Democrat Alphonso Small Jr. is making closer ties between deputies and residents the centerpiece of his bid to become Beaufort County’s next sheriff, with Election Day set for Nov. 3.
The seat is open because Sheriff P.J. Tanner plans to retire in January 2027 when his seventh term ends. Small faces Republican Doug Seifert in the race.
Small, who has served two years on the Beaufort County School District board, began his career with the Estill police department and later worked for sheriff’s offices in Allendale and Hampton counties. On the school board he backed teacher pay raises and weapon detection systems at middle and high schools.
He said he would put more deputies on patrol in neighborhoods where residents have raised concerns, hold town halls around the county and launch prevention programs aimed at curbing youth crime. He acknowledged he has never worked inside the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
