ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. — Democrat Annie Andrews brought her U.S. Senate campaign to St. Helena Island this week, pressing supporters to turn out as the Nov. 3 general election draws close.
Andrews, a pediatrician, pitched herself as an outsider rather than a career politician. She is running against Republican Sen. Darline Graham, who was appointed to the seat after the death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. President Donald Trump is set to campaign alongside Graham on Thursday.
At the event, Andrews pointed to backing from two past governors, Jim Hodges and David Beasley. She said she wants to tackle Medicaid budget cuts and favors a two-year pause on new data centers in South Carolina to protect local input and energy rates.
Island residents do not have to leave home to vote early. The St. Helena Branch Library on Jonathan Francis Senior Road is one of four early voting centers in Beaufort County, open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 31. The others are the main elections office on John Galt Road in Beaufort, the Bluffton Branch Library and the USCB Hilton Head campus.
